Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHO ARE THE VIPERS?

The Vipers are a non-profit lacrosse club started in 2005 and is based in San Jose, California. The Vipers started with one Junior Varsity High School team and have expanded into several teams, including our first girls team in 2009. For the 2013 season, the plan is to have several teams:

Boys:

  • High School Varsity (9th thru 12th grade)
  • Boys U14
  • Boys U12
  • Boys U10
  • Boys U8

2. HOW MANY YOUTH TEAMS WILL THERE BE?

The goal is to field a minimum of 1 youth boys teams for age groups U9 thru U15 and a High School Boys Varsity Team.  Depending on total sign-ups this could change.

3. HOW MANY PLAYERS PER YOUTH TEAM?

Our goal is to field 18-20 players per team for U11 thru U15 teams.  10 players are on the field at one time. Game lasts approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for youth teams.

4. WHEN DOES THE SEASON START?

Practices start in late January and occur twice a week.  Games generally begin in March and run through the final tournament in late May.  Each team will play a minimum of 10 to 14 games.

5. WHEN AND WHERE ARE PRACTICES HELD?

Practices and home games are played at Hathaway Park (1497 Vallejo Drive, San Jose, CA 95130) and are held twice a week after school.

6. WHEN, WHERE, HOW MANY, AND WHO WILL WE BE PLAYING GAMES?

Games will be played on weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday). Games will be played against other NCJLA registered teams at either our home field or theirs. Local teams include areas such as: South San Jose, Saratoga/Los Gatos, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Belmont/San Carlos, Monterey and Santa Cruz.. See http://www.ncjlax.org for all of the teams in the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association. Goal is minimum 10 games or more.

7. WHAT IS THE COST FOR YOUTH TEAMS?

Costs are determined just prior to the opening of registration and are based on projected field rental costs, referees, NCJLA team and individual fees, coaching, equipment and overall administrative costs. Please visit our registration page to sign up.

8. WHAT IF I PLAY OTHER SPORTS DURING SPRING (for Youth level)?

While the Vipers aim to be a competitive club, we do encourage kids to try multiple sports. By the end of January, set practice days will be known and a rough idea of game schedules will be posted. The key is to determine if more than 1 sport will fit into a particular kid’s schedule.

9. WHERE CAN I GET EQUIPMENT?

We are currently working with several vendors to provide equipment to our players.  More information will be available shortly. Typically, equipment last for three years. The helmets at youth level are designed to be adjustable so as child’s head grows the helmet can adjust. We advise that you do not buy a helmet until your child determines that they want to play. If your child is uncertain, you may want to buy just a stick.

10. WHAT IF I BUY EQUIPMENT AND MY CHILD DECIDES NOT TO PLAY?

Should your child determine that they don't want to play lacrosse after you have purchased the equipment, we will try to make an arrangement for you to sell the equipment to a new player who does not have equipment. We will help facilitate this as best we can.

11. COACHING AND ADMINISTRATION

Nipper Donovan will be the principal contact for youth teams. His background is 25 years of lacrosse having coached at JV, High School, and men’s leagues all in the Bay Area. He has played 25 years. Most recently as a member of the San Jose Stealth Professional Indoor Lacrosse Team in 2004. In college he played at Princeton University. At every level he has won championships.

Ideally, each team will have one experienced lacrosse coach and an assistant who is not required to have lacrosse experience but a love for kids and working with them. Currently we are always looking for more coaches. Coaching is a volunteer position for the most part.

12. KEY CONTACTS FOR YOUTH TEAMS

There are many individuals (10+) already working behind the scenes the last two months to make sure everything is in place for the spring.
Visit our Contact page.

13. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

As a non-profit organization we rely solely on the support of our families and volunteers to make the club run smoothly. Some examples of where help is needed: Assistant Coach (training is provided), game coordinator, team parent, field and equipment, field maintenance, scorekeepers, fundraising and PR. We encourage our Parents to be involved in whatever way they can.
Vist our volunteer page.

14. INDIVIDUAL OR CORPORATE SPONSERSHIP

Vipers Lacrosse depends on sponsors to help us grow the sport of lacrosse in our area and keep cost reasonable. Sponsors can be individuals or companies who want to help our kids experience "the fastest growing sport on the West Coast”.
Visit our sponsors page.

15. GOAL OF YOUTH TEAMS

The goal of our teams is to introduce the sport of lacrosse to BOTH the child and the parents. The goal is to not win every game but through lacrosse, teach everyone about teamwork, losing and winning, being a good sportsperson, and most importantly having fun.
